Writing ourselves to freedom

Although Uganda’s dictatorship slowly chops off our fingers,

We shall continue writing bitter truths about the suffering of our people.

Our shaking fingers festering with wounds from bayonets

Scribble painful poems about the everyday lives of our people.

Trembling with fear of reprisal from a punitive repressive state,

We shall craft wondrous poems bleeding from our oppressed hearts.

The dictator’s brutes can abduct and brutalise the bodies of our writers,

But they will never arrest or beat up the published books and poems.

The oppressor’s goons can torture and break the ankles of our poets,

But they will never break our powerful sentences that speak ugly truths.

We are Uganda’s dissident writers.

We commit to critically writing ugly truths to power.

We are writing ourselves to freedom.

Although Uganda’s autocrats squeeze hard our reverberating voice boxes,

We shall continue reciting sorrowful verses about the plight of our people.

Our suffocating throats choking with tear gas thrown to scatter us

Rhythmically churn out sad stanzas that rhyme about the struggles of our people.

Squeaking or whispering criticism against the background of their military might,

We shall challenge their tankers, commandos and bullets with our satirical words.

The autocrat’s gunmen can knock out our writers’ teeth with the butts of their guns,

But they will never handcuff or shackle the texts written against the vices of the state.

The suppressor’s interrogators can electrocute the balls of our wordsmiths and poets,

But they will never kill the paragraphs and punctuation marks of our written pieces.

We are Uganda’s dissident poets.

We commit to composing pieces that mirror society.

We are writing ourselves to freedom.

Twice, she was arrested, charged and imprisoned in maximum security prison because of her poetry which criticized the failings of the government in Uganda. On both occasions she was accused of cyber harassment and offensive communication against president Museveni and his family. She is currently living in Germany with her three children, where she is a scholar of the Writers-In-Exile program of PEN Germany.

Escribimos nuestro camino a la libertad

Aunque la dictadura de Uganda nos ampute los dedos uno a uno,

Debemos seguir escribiendo las verdades amargas sobre el sufrimiento de nuestro pueblo.

Nuestros dedos temblorosos por las heridas enconadas de las bayonetas

Garabatean poemas amargos sobre la vida diaria de nuestro pueblo.

Aterrados por las represalias de un estado punitivo represor,

Debemos producir poemas maravillosos con la sangre de nuestros corazones oprimidos.

Los bestias del dictador podrán secuestrar y apalear los cuerpos de nuestros escritores,

Pero nunca arrestarán o golpearán los libros y poemas publicados.

Los matones del opresor pueden torturar y quebrar los tobillos de nuestros poetas,

Pero nunca quebrarán nuestras poderosas oraciones que cuentan las terribles verdades.

Somos los escritores disidentes de Uganda.

Nos comprometemos a escribir de manera crítica la cruda realidad de quienes están en el poder.

Escribimos nuestro camino a la libertad.

Aunque los autócratas de Uganda aprieten con fuerza nuestras gargantas retumbantes,

Debemos seguir recitando versos tristes sobre las penurias de nuestro pueblo.

Nuestras gargantas sofocadas, ahogadas con el gas lacrimógeno que nos tiran para dispersarnos

Producen rítmicamente estrofas tristes que riman sobre las luchas de nuestro pueblo.

Chillando o susurrando crítica contra la estructura de su poder militar,

Debemos desafiar sus tanques, comandos y balas con nuestras palabras mordaces.

Los sicarios del autácrata pueden romper los dientes de nuestros escritores con las culatas de sus pistolas,

Pero nunca podrán esposar ni encadenar los textos escritos contra los vicios del estado.

Los interrogadores del opresor pueden electrocutar los cojones de nuestros prosistas y poetas,

Pero nunca matarán los párrafos y signos de puntuación de nuestras obras escritas.

Somos los poetas disidentes de Uganda.

Estamos comprometidos a componer piezas que reflejen nuestra sociedad.

Escribimos nuestro camino a la libertad.

Stella Nyanzi, PhD. Es poeta, activista por la justicia social y académica ugandesa. Dos veces fue arrestada, acusada y encarcelada en una prisión de máxima seguridad debido a su poesía, que critica las fallas del gobierno de Uganda. En ambas ocasiones se le acusó de acoso cibernético y comunicación ofensiva contra el presidente Museveni y su familia. Actualmente vive en Alemania con sus tres hijos, donde es becaria del programa Writers-In-Exile de PEN Alemania.
